Extreme Makeover – Encinitas, CA
The residence had been beautifully remodeled inside to reflect the owners love of clean contemporary design. However the existing pool, spa and large patio looked very dated and did not take advantage of dramatic back country views. We removed the large pile of boulders that constituted the water feature feeding the pool and replaced it with simple angled walls faced with dark tiles and a sheer descent water feature. The pool and spa received new sand finished concrete coping, matte gray water line tiles and improved lighting. A new deck cantilevers over the slope and features an ipe and honed black granite fire element, sleek modular furniture and gunmetal containers filled with succulents and grasses. The outdoor kitchen with generous bar seating repeats the ipe and black granite materials and takes advantage of the sweeping views. The covered dining terrace, furnished with stainless steel and recycled teak table and chairs, is warmed by ceiling mounted heaters. A modern graphite colored water feature is visible from all of these new spaces. The simple plant palette of silver, buff, yellow and rosy red add splashes of color and texture to these very contemporary outdoor rooms.
